The Calculator Collective

We’ve done the maths so you don’t have to!

Practical calculators to help you make confident, informed choices about what goes in your dog's bowl.

Food Calculators

Whether you're comparing foods, checking a puppy diet, or working out how much to feed, these calculators do the maths so you don't have to. They're designed to cut through marketing fluff and give you useful numbers based on your actual dog.

How to use them: Each calculator works independently, so just pick the one that fits what you're trying to figure out. You don't need to fill in every field - most will still give you helpful results with just the basics. If you get stuck or want someone to talk it through with you, Sally's always happy to help.

Calorie Calculator

Whether you're home-feeding, using a commercial diet, or combining the two, this tool helps you work out your dog’s daily calorie needs based on their weight, age, and activity level. It’s a great starting point if you’re new to portion planning or need a quick check-in!

Dog Food Comparison Calculator

Comparing two foods but not sure which is actually better value? This free calculator helps you compare two dog foods side by side by showing:

  • Real feeding costs (per day, week and month)

  • How much to feed based on your dog’s size, age and neuter status

  • How long each bag will last

  • Dry matter nutrition (optional) for a fair, like-for-like comparison

Dry matter conversion removes the effect of water, helping you look past marketing and compare foods more accurately.

You don’t need every detail to use this tool - it’ll still work for cost comparison alone.

Designed to support informed choices, not judgement.

Dog Food Comparison Calculator

Compare two foods by real feeding cost and by dry matter (DM%) for fair wet vs dry comparisons. Calories are estimated from the label analysis (protein/fat/fibre/ash/moisture).

Dog Food Transition Calculator

A calorie-based transition calculator — not guesswork, not percentages

Changing your dog’s food shouldn’t be a gamble with their digestion, skin, or stools.
That’s why I created this Dog Food Transition Calculator — a practical, evidence-led calculator that builds a 7-day transition plan based on your dog’s calorie needs, not arbitrary percentages or scoop sizes.

By entering your dog’s age, weight, neuter status and activity level, along with the energy density of both foods, the calculator works out exactly how many grams of each food to feed each day — ensuring calorie intake stays consistent throughout the transition.

This approach helps reduce common issues I see in, including:

  • Loose stools during food changes

  • Over- or under-feeding when switching between foods with very different calorie densities

  • Weight gain or loss caused by “percentage-based” transitions

  • Digestive upset when moving between dry, wet, fresh or raw diets

Designed to support informed choices, not judgement.

Dog Food Transition Calculator (Calorie-Based)

Dog Food Transition Calculator (Calorie-Based)

Builds a 5, 7, or 10-day transition using calories (not % food weight), so it works properly for dry↔wet swaps. Output shows daily grams of each food, plus how to split across meals.

1) Dog details

We estimate daily calories using RER × life-stage factor, or you can transition using the dog’s current intake (recommended if weight is stable).

2) Food A (current food)

Enter energy for Food A either as kcal per 100g OR from analytical constituents. You only need one method.

Food A calories (choose ONE method)

Option A is best if the pack gives kcal/100g. Option B estimates calories from the label.

3) Food B (new food)

Same as above: enter kcal/100g OR analytical constituents.

Food B calories (choose ONE method)

Puppy Food Suitability Checker

A quick check to see if a food's fat, calcium, and phosphorus levels are in the right ballpark for your puppy's age and breed size. Handy for screening options before you buy - though it's not a replacement for checking the food is properly formulated for growth.

Puppy Food Suitability Checker

Quick screening for fat + calcium/phosphorus balance by age and breed size.

Inputs

Needed to convert to DM.
Some labels only show a Ca:P ratio.
Best option when available because amount + ratio both matter.
Enter as a number like 1.3 (meaning 1.3:1).
Note: If you only have the ratio, this tool can’t confirm mineral amounts. A “good” ratio can still hide too much calcium for large/giant puppies.
Important: This is a screening tool (not a full “complete & balanced” verification). Always check the product states it is formulated for growth (and for large-breed puppies where relevant).
