Why Does My Dog Fart So Much? Causes & Diet Tips

If your dog seems to fart constantly, their food may be playing a role — but it isn’t always as simple as blaming one ingredient. From treats and overfeeding to fermentable fibres, eating too quickly and potential food intolerances, there are several reasons some dogs produce more gas than others. In this guide, I explain what excessive flatulence can tell us about your dog’s diet, when it may be worth making nutritional changes, and when veterinary investigation is needed.


Why Does My Dog Fart So Much?

If you regularly find yourself asking, “Why does my dog fart so much?”, you are certainly not alone.

A certain amount of gas is completely normal. Gas is produced naturally as food moves through the digestive tract, intestinal bacteria ferment parts of the diet and your dog swallows small amounts of air while eating and drinking.

But there is a difference between the occasional dog fart and a dog who is constantly passing wind, producing particularly smelly gas, experiencing a noisy or gurgling stomach, or appearing uncomfortable after eating.

Excessive flatulence in dogs can sometimes be surprisingly simple to improve. Treats, portion sizes, eating speed and the particular combination of ingredients in a dog's food can all contribute.

In other dogs, however, persistent gas can occur alongside gastrointestinal disease or an adverse reaction to food and may need further investigation.

So before simply changing your dog's food, let's look at what might actually be causing all that wind.

Why Do Dogs Fart?

There are two particularly important sources of intestinal gas: air that your dog swallows when eating and drinking and gas produced within the gastrointestinal tract.

Once certain carbohydrates and fibres reach the large intestine, bacteria living there begin to ferment them.

Fermentation itself is not a bad thing.

It produces beneficial compounds called short-chain fatty acids, or SCFAs, which are important for the cells lining the large intestine and the wider intestinal environment.

But fermentation also produces gas.

Different fibres ferment at very different rates, which means two foods with a similar fibre percentage on the packet can potentially behave quite differently within the digestive tract.

The amount of gas produced can therefore depend on:

  • the amount your dog eats

  • how digestible their food is

  • the types of carbohydrate and fibre within it

  • the quantity of fermentable material reaching the colon

  • treats and chews

  • their individual gut microbiome

  • how quickly they eat.

Could Your Dog's Treats Be Making Them Fart?

Treats are one of the first things I look at when assessing a dog's diet.

An owner may tell me their dog eats one particular complete food, but once we look at their whole daily intake, we may also have:

  • training treats

  • dental chews

  • natural chews

  • biscuits

  • table scraps

  • cheese

  • lick mats

  • enrichment toys

  • fruit and vegetables

  • supplements.

Suddenly, one relatively simple diet contains a lot more variables when dealing with their dog’s gas.

Treats can also contain ingredients such as legumes, vegetable fibres, fruit, inulin, FOS or other prebiotic fibres.

Again, these aren't automatically bad things but your dog’s digestive system constantly producing gas that would knock you side ways is telling you something is not right

If your dog’s main food already contains several fermentable fibres and you then add several treats and chews containing more of them, their total intake may be considerably higher than you realise.

Treats should ideally account for no more than approximately 10% of your dog's daily calories, with the majority of their calories coming from a complete and balanced diet.

If your dog's wind has become excessive, don't just read the ingredients on their main food. Look at everything they eat across an entire day.

Can Being Overweight Contribute to Excessive Gas?

Being overweight doesn't automatically cause flatulence, but it can be part of the bigger picture.

Weight gain usually indicates that a dog is consistently receiving more calories than their body requires.

That might be coming from their main meal, but treats, chews and extras can make a surprisingly large contribution.

More food going through the digestive tract potentially means more undigested or fermentable material reaching the large intestine.

If your dog is carrying excess weight, it is therefore worth assessing their actual calorie intake and body condition rather than simply following the feeding guide on the packet.

Sometimes improving portion control and reducing unnecessary extras can improve several things at once — including weight, stool quality and excessive wind.

Fermentable Fibre and Dog Gas

This is where things get particularly interesting from a nutrition point of view.

  • Fibre doesnt equal one single ingredient.

  • Different types of fibre can behave very differently inside your dog's digestive system.

  • Some are poorly fermented by intestinal bacteria, while others are highly fermentable.

Research comparing different canine fibre sources has demonstrated substantial differences in both fermentation rate and gas production. Fructans, pectins and certain gums, for example, can be relatively rapidly fermented, while other fibres ferment much more slowly.

Ingredients and fibre sources I would consider when looking at a particularly gassy dog's diet include:

  • peas

  • pea fibre

  • pea starch

  • lentils

  • chickpeas

  • beans and other legumes

  • potato

  • potato fibre

  • sweet potato

  • beet pulp

  • inulin

  • fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

  • pectin

  • fruit fibres

  • soy fibre

  • soybean hulls

  • psyllium

  • resistant starches

  • certain gums and prebiotic fibre blends.

That absolutely does not mean these are bad ingredients, many fermentable fibres can have beneficial effects on the gut.

It comes down to the type, amount, overall formulation and individual dog.

What Percentage of Peas, Potato or Sweet Potato Is Too Much?

This is an important question because it is tempting to create another simple dog-food rule:

"Never feed a food containing more than X% peas."

Unfortunately, nutrition isn't quite that straightforward.

There is no scientifically established percentage of peas, lentils, potato or sweet potato at which every dog will develop excessive gas.

For example, research investigating potato fibre has used diets containing approximately 1.5%, 3%, 4.5% and 6% potato fibre. Increasing potato fibre increased several fermentation products without adversely affecting overall nutrient digestibility or stool characteristics. [2]

Research into legumes has also demonstrated that peas, lentils, chickpeas and beans differ in their composition and fermentation characteristics.[3]

So instead of looking for one arbitrary percentage, I look at the whole formulation.

For example, imagine a dog food declares:

Sweet potato 15%
Peas 10%
Lentils 8%

Together, those ingredients account for 33% of the formulation.

That doesn't automatically make the food unsuitable.

But if we are investigating excessive wind, knowing that a significant proportion of the recipe comes from potentially fermentable carbohydrate sources is much more useful than simply saying, “Sweet potato is healthy.”

The same issue arises when ingredients are split into components such as:

  • peas

  • pea starch

  • pea protein

  • pea fibre.

Looking at each one individually can make peas appear less significant within the overall formulation than they actually are.

Unfortunately, manufacturers are not required to provide the percentage of every single ingredient, so sometimes we simply don't have enough information to calculate this accurately.

Does My Dog Have a Food Intolerance?

Possibly.

But farting does not automatically equal food intolerance or food allergy.

A food intolerance is a non-immune adverse reaction to something within the diet, whereas a true food allergy involves an immune response.

Food-related reactions can include gastrointestinal signs such as:

  • excessive wind

  • bloating

  • soft stools

  • diarrhoea

  • increased stool frequency

  • vomiting

  • gastrointestinal discomfort.

Dogs with food allergies can also experience persistent itching, paw licking or recurrent skin and ear problems.

However, repeatedly switching between chicken-free, grain-free, sensitive or limited-ingredient foods isn't a reliable way to diagnose a food reaction.

Neither are commercially available hair, saliva or blood intolerance tests.

When a genuine adverse food reaction is suspected, an appropriately controlled elimination diet followed by dietary challenge is the recognised approach.[4]

Before starting an elimination diet, though, I would want to establish whether there is a simpler explanation for the gas.

Is Your Dog Eating Too Quickly?

Sometimes the issue isn't just what goes into your dog.

It's how it gets there.

Dogs who gulp their food quickly can swallow more air — known as aerophagia.

Dogs who become highly excited around meals or compete with other dogs for food may be particularly prone to eating rapidly.

Slowing down meals may therefore help.

You could try:

  • splitting food into several smaller meals across the day

  • using an appropriate slow feeder

  • scattering kibble

  • using enrichment toys

  • feeding dogs separately in multi-dog households

  • reducing excitement and competition around mealtimes.

If your dog inhales dinner in 20 seconds and then spends the evening passing wind, repeatedly changing protein sources may completely miss part of the problem.

What If My Dog Farts and Has Loose Stools?

This is where I would start paying more attention to the wider gastrointestinal picture.

Gas combined with regular soft stools or diarrhoea is different from an otherwise healthy dog occasionally producing offensive wind.

  • Does it happen after particular treats?

  • Are stools normal in the morning but softer later in the day?

  • Does your dog need to open their bowels four or five times on a walk?

  • Does the wind become worse after a particular food?

  • Have symptoms appeared following a diet change?

A food and symptom diary can be extremely useful here before you make a plan of just switching the food

When Should I Speak to My Vet About My Dog's Gas?

If your dog is bright, maintaining their weight, eating normally and producing healthy stools, occasional flatulence usually isn't something to panic about.

However, persistent or suddenly worsening gas deserves more attention, particularly if it occurs alongside:

  • persistent diarrhoea

  • repeated vomiting

  • unexplained weight loss

  • reduced appetite

  • abdominal pain

  • significant changes in stool

  • lethargy

  • blood in the stool

  • failure to maintain weight.

Excessive flatulence alongside weight loss or diarrhoea can indicate that something more significant is occurring within the gastrointestinal tract and warrants veterinary investigation.

Gas Is Not the Same as Bloat

It is also extremely important to distinguish ordinary farting from gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly called bloat.

A dog with a swollen or distended abdomen who appears distressed, is drooling excessively, struggling to settle, repeatedly trying to vomit without bringing anything up, having difficulty breathing, becoming weak or collapsing requires immediate emergency veterinary care.

GDV is life-threatening and is not something to monitor at home.[6]

How Can a Canine Nutrition Consultation Help?

If veterinary disease has been ruled out but your dog could still clear a room after dinner, this is where properly assessing their entire diet can be incredibly useful.

During a nutrition consultation, I don't simply look at the name on the dog-food bag.

I look at:

  • your dog's calorie requirements

  • their current weight and body condition

  • how much food they actually receive

  • meal timings

  • treats

  • chews

  • supplements

  • ingredient composition

  • fibre sources

  • carbohydrate sources

  • stool quality

  • digestive symptoms

  • feeding behaviours

  • previous diets and responses to them.

We can then start looking for patterns.

Is your dog receiving more calories than they need?

Are treats adding significantly more food than you realised?

Does their food contain multiple fermentable fibre sources?

Are several legume ingredients being used within the same formulation?

Are they eating too quickly?

Are we constantly changing foods and making the picture harder to interpret?

Or does the history genuinely suggest that an adverse food reaction needs investigating?

The answer isn't always “change their food.”

Sometimes it is about simplifying the diet, adjusting quantities or reducing unnecessary extras such as toppers and supplements

In other cases, changing the fibre or carbohydrate profile can make much more sense than removing multiple proteins without evidence.

And where symptoms suggest that something more than straightforward dietary fermentation may be happening, nutritional support should work alongside your veterinarian, not replace them.
