A savoury, meat-based birthday cake for dogs who prefer dinner to dessert. This is a low-fat, meatloaf-style celebration cake made with lean meat, vegetables, a little fruit and a simple mashed potato topper.

It is designed as an occasional treat, not a complete and balanced meal.

A savoury, meat-based birthday cake for dogs who prefer dinner to dessert. This is a low-fat, meatloaf-style celebration cake made with lean meat, vegetables, a little fruit and a simple mashed potato topper.

Ingredients

• For the Meatloaf Cake
• 500g extra-lean turkey mince or chicken mince
• 1 medium egg white
• 60g rolled oats
• 80g grated carrot
• 80g grated courgette, squeezed to remove excess water
• 50g cooked pumpkin or butternut squash, mashed
• 40g apple, finely diced, core and seeds removed
• 30g blueberries
• 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, optional
• 1–2 tablespoons water if needed to bind
• For the Low-Fat Topper
• 200g cooked mashed potato, plain and unsalted
• 1–2 tablespoons fat-free plain yoghurt, optional
• A few blueberries or grated carrot to decorate
• Optional: a small sprinkle of chopped parsley

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 160°C fan / gas mark 4.
2. Line a small cake tin, loaf tin or oven-safe ramekin with baking paper.
3. In a bowl, mix the turkey or chicken mince, egg white, oats, grated carrot, courgette, pumpkin, apple, blueberries and parsley.
4. If the mixture feels too dry, add 1–2 tablespoons of water. It should hold together like a soft meatloaf mixture.
5. Press the mixture firmly into the tin and smooth the top.
6. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until fully cooked through. The centre should be piping hot and no pink meat should remain.
7. Allow the cake to cool completely before adding the topper.
8. Mix the mashed potato with a little fat-free yoghurt if using, then spread or pipe it over the cooled meatloaf cake.
9. Decorate with a few blueberries and grated carrot
